First look: Patch Halifax

An annotated photo of Robie Street's new work room and fabric shop

A new surge (and serge) of creative energy hit the north end this week as Patch Halifax (2571 Robie Street), a part-work space, part-fabric-shop, officially opened for business. Lucky enough to be one of the first through the door, we got the grand tour from owner Christina Pasquet and started daydreaming about whipping up some new curtains (gotta start small, guys).

1. Equipped with a fleet of Bernina sewing machines—ranging from beginner to what Pasquet calls “fancy souped-up”—Patch’s work space will host workshops aplenty (starting in September, stay tuned) but also welcomes drop-in sewers to use ’em ($7 per hour for the sewing machines, $8 per hour for the serger).

2. Even if you aren’t sew inclined, the gorgeous fabrics here are enough to make you want to create. Patch currently has about 70 bolts of beautiful colours and patterns—including the pictured ones from Birch organic fabric—and by fall Pasquet’ll have double that. Good luck choosing.

3. Whether you’re doing your stitching at home or at Patch, you can find loads of patterns to guide your needle. The rad, Toronto-based Victory Patterns (pictured) or Vancouver’s Sewaholic Patterns can help you update your wardrobe in a bragworthy way, but you’ll find maps to making quilts, bags, kids’ clothes and other projects here, too.

What’s the scariest Halifax ghost story?

  • Sidewalk closed: please use other side
  • We used to date
  • Why I’m leaving Nova Scotia
  • Closed early for private event
  • Route on detour
  • Does anyone have a truck I can borrow?
