Amy Donovan has always been a self-starter.
Entrepreneur by day, raging derby girl by night, she started her first business—Sweeping Sweeties, a cleaning company—at just 19. Seven years and many derby bouts later she was ready for a change and started brainstorming her next venture. Cocoon Bout-ique (2179 Gottingen Street, which was once the Good Food Emporium and then NADA Cuisine) will hatch October 15, revealing brightly coloured walls of alternative fashions like rockabilly, pin-up, psychobilly and, of course, roller derby apparel and gear.
A member of the badass Halifax Misfits, she took some inspiration from Saint John’s Heartbreak Boutique while doing her researching and ordering, bringing items from pin-up dresses to roller skates, protective gear to wacky spandex tights. “It’s a big risk that I’m taking, but at least I’ll know I tried.” says Donovan her north end shop, though active derby teams in Cape Breton, New Glasgow and the valley bode well for its future. Game on!
