Home Grown Organic's grand re-opening

Gottingen Street goings on

Posted By on Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 1:40 PM

It took three years of “harder than usual work" to turn 2310 Gottingen Street into the new home for Home Grown Organic Foods, and finally, it’s time to celebrate.

The grocery store/food delivery biz officially switched its operation from its old stomping grounds on Allan Street to Gottingen in April, and it’s been an exciting transition. “It's like night and day. That was a little clubhouse, this is the real deal, this is what we've been striving for all along,” says Geordie Ouchterlony who started HGOF in 1999. “Its nice to have a broader impact and wider reach with better visibility and better storage.”

Better storage means a more fridge and freezer space (stocked with Liberté yogurts and other organic dairy and Meadowbrook meats, to name a couple of dandies). And this weekend the hook and line seafood is back, bringing halibut, cod, hake and cusk to your fingertips.

The grand re-opening on Saturday, July 27 (1-5pm) isn’t just a time for pats on the back and basking in greatness (though it’s for that, too)—there’ll be free samples for the tasting, and collab-squad If You Build It will be building a solar panel on site, just a taste of cool projects to come at HGOF.

"I feel like we're joining the dots between the Hydrostone and Propeller" says Ouchetlony of the growing business district on Gottingen Street. "When we started three years ago we were one of the first buildings to make a move, now we've seen numerous other spots pop up."

If you'd like to extend this celebration of good food and local business into your weekly shopping routine, stop in Wednesday through Friday, 1-7pm and Saturdays 9am-5pm.

What should Halifax do about Aribnb?

  • Limit the number of listings one person can have
  • Charge a per-night fee that funds affordable housing
  • Limit Aribnbs to actual home-sharing only
  • Set a cap for percentage of a neighbourhood that can have Airbnbs
  • Leave it be and let the market sort itself out
