Thirty-some years ago a fire blazed through the Chebucto Street townhouses. Looking out for their neighbours, residents from surrounding streets pulled up its socks and got together to help the people who’d not just lost belongings, but their homes too.

Even though it was built around loss, this neighbourly spirit was the start of an awesome annual event, the Neighbourhood Yard Sale that takes over Duncan, Lawrence, Allan, Chebucto, Harvard, Yukon and Yale streets. It’ll have you scouring curbside finds Saturday, June 15 from 9am-1pm (or, if our friend rain sticks around, Sunday June 16). “You can spend like 45 minutes on each street, just wandering your way up,” says Greg Woolner, who’s best yard sale score—a tape player, batteries to fit it and a cassette copy of Neil Young’s Harvest—came together from three separate houses.

He’s one of the community invigorators behind PlaceMaking Halifax, which has joined forces with the Yard Sale this year in prep for its upcoming July 13 event that’ll involve painting a massive mural over the entirety of Chebucto Lane.

“We don’t need to wait for a disaster before creating connection,” Woolner says of why the part treasure hunt, part community morale booster is over three decades strong. “That connection can create great resilience in a neighbourhood.”
