Carbonstok

Posted on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 4:50 PM

The Uncommon Group (1030 South Park) is company with many faucets. From the Rum Runners (1479 Lower Water), to the various Uncommon Grounds cafe locations across town, to the funky children's clothing shop Uncommon Kids Wear (1030 South Park), to the sweet tooth haven Sugah! (1497 Lower Water). And now owners Gordon Stevens and Trina Stevens are adding another extraordinary business to their roster---Carbonstok (1235 Barrington).

"Carbonstok is a vague reference to our collective carbon footprint and its connection with the stock in our store," says Gordon Stevens. "Although we are not a 'green' store, many of our products are from environmentally sensitive manufacturers, recycled products, organic products, etc. We've also worked to incorporate many environmentally conscious choices in the actual store design---compact fluorescent lights, FSC certified wood in all our fixtures, milk paint instead of stain on our wood units and reusable shopping bags."

Carbonstok was inspired by many of the products the couple came across while buying for Uncommon Kids Gear, but didn't fit the children's store model. Products include various design pieces, eco cleaning products, recycled wine bottle glasses, recycled leather, reused bicycle chain products and the like.

"We all pick up magazines and read articles about great new products, but quite often they aren't available in Nova Scotia and we wanted to do something to change that."
