Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Halifax’s newest venue for physical fitness Pilates Studio (1283 South Park) opened yesterday. The studio focuses on the fundamentals of strength and conditioning training using the Pilates method. Owned and operated by Janel Fisher and Michael Harvie, the Pilates Studio hopes to make health education and fitness more accessible to the every day person. The art of Pilates requires concentration and attention to detail. Harvie and Fisher hope to inspire all ages and body types to try out Pilates. The studio offers daily classes ranging from a drop in rate of $10 to $80 (which is a ten class card). Sundays are always pay what you can.“The result is holistic and strengthens the whole body, not just one set of muscles, while also improving posture and flexibility. Every body has a unique structure and Pilates is used by a variety of individuals,” says Fisher. “From those wishing to improve and strengthen core muscles and posture, to professional dancers wishing to correct postural defects, to professional athletes focusing on improving overall performance. Pilates is great for individuals of all ages and abilities to aid in reducing physical and mental tension and improve overall strength and athletic performance.
