Hibiscus opens

Posted By on Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 1:33 PM

As hinted last week, Hibiscus**, the new clothing boutique that’ll be making its home in the former Great Canadian Bagel space (5407 Spring Garden) should be opening this month, too. Hibiscus owner Angie DeMont says she’s shooting for a mid-November opening. The boutique, named after DeMont’s favorite flower, is actually the second Hibiscus that DeMont’s started; the first is a summer-only shop that she has been running in Chester, her hometown, from May until September for the last four years. (This summer, DeMont will be doing double-duty as owner/manager of both boutiques). Hibiscus will carry unique shoes, accessories, handbag and scarves---“any accessory that will make a woman look beautiful, basically,” sums up DeMont. The idea is for shoppers to be able to find individual, distinctive pieces. “I don’t buy many of the same item. I usually carry maybe four maximum of each item,” says DeMont, who does much of her buying while traveling in Montreal, India and Italy. “It’s very eclectic, and international, cosmopolitan…It’s modern, but with an ethnic flair,” says DeMont about the shop. The shop’s offerings include some accessories made from organic materials, as well as pieces that have been hand-embroidered in India. DeMont’s also endeavoring to carry fairly traded fashion in the boutique whenever possible; currently, she’s working to develop a line of hand-stitched scarves and sweaters for the shop with a group of women living in North India. This all sounds great…but will there be any bagels? Learn more at hibiscusboutique.com.
