A piece of Persia

Shiraz restaurant opened last month in the small, bright purple building near the corner of Hollis and South. Shiraz serves a variety of Persian dishes, including lamb and chicken kabobs, rice dishes, salads and soups. Food is available for both eat-in (there are a couple of stools inside, but space is at a premium) and take-out, and Shiraz also has a number of chairs set up outside. Food is prepared on site, both in the compact kitchen that occupies the bulk of the space, and on a BBQ outside when the weather is behaving well. “It’s not bad for a start,” says Zahra Tabesh, wife of owner Mohammad Tabesh.

Sugar bish

Sugah! Ice Cream and Confectionary Emporium opened next to Rum Runner’s Cake Factory in Bishop’s Landing at the beginning of May. Steven’s General Store is also now a part of Sugah!, having moved out of its former location around the corner in the courtyard. Sugah! specializes in homemade candies, including butter crunch toffees, chocolate clusters, lollipops and marshmallows, which are all made in-store and in view of customers. The candies can then be mixed with ice cream on a marble slab according to customer specifications. Manager Janice Tanner says business has been going very well so far—despite the terrible weather—and “people are really liking the whole ice cream process.”

Accountably in shape

Fitness Together had its grand opening two weeks ago. The private personal training studio is located at 936 Bedford Hwy and is designed to help clients reach their fitness goal—whether it’s losing weight for a wedding, training for a marathon or simply getting back in shape. Fitness Together also provides its clients with nutritional guidance programs and encourages clients to fill out “accountability journals” including what they eat, how they feel and how much they’re exercising outside of sessions. “All the focus is on the client,” says owner Rob Frederick. “And the biggest part about it is accountability. You come in with specific goals and we’ll give you all the tools and stuff, and we’re going to hold you accountable because we want you to reach your goals. That’s what we’re there for. It’s not like, ‘Here’s your session, have fun,’ it’s, ‘Here’s your session, now we’re gonna get real busy about it.’”

Turn it upCharles Austin of Ultramagnetic Recording Studio (formerly located in the Khyber) has relocated to 3200 Kempt, suite 211, and joined forces with Andrew Gillis to create Echo Chamber Audio. Austin brings with him the same set-up from his Ultramagnetic days, and Gillis also owns Whiskey Jack Audio, a mobile studio set-up. “We have more mics, more equipment and the possibility to do location recording,” says Gillis. Austin and Gillis hope to have the finishing touches complete for a grand opening in July, but in the meantime Echo Chamber has already recorded the likes of Garrett Mason and Buck 65.

Caring for caregivers

Care Strategies, a new business focused on providing services for caregivers, is now open. Business owners Mary Anne Nardecchia (a former community health nurse) and Gail Bruhm (a former social worker) opened Care Strategies to “address the grey zone where nobody provides any kind of support or assistance to caregivers.” Care Strategies provides services in three major areas, including education for caregivers in the workplace, support for long-distance caregivers and strategizing for caregivers so they stay well. “We talk a lot about the person receiving the care and what their needs are, but we don’t talk about the caregiver’s needs, and they can be very different from the person receiving care,” says Nardecchia. “We don’t do very well at helping them work through these huge issues that come along. They’re trying to juggle family and caregiving and a job and it can get very overwhelming. So we talk with them, come up with options, strategize about best ways to more forward and how to stay healthy and well, because if anything happens to them, they’re pretty useless to the person they’re trying to give care to.”

Feast of the sabbath

Sobeys Inc. opened four of its Halifax-area locations last weekend, along with two locations in New Glasgow and Sydney River. Following in the footsteps of Atlantic Superstore’s opening of their Barrington store two weekends ago, Sobeys was able to skirt the anti-Sunday shopping law by dividing its locations into a number of separate businesses that each occupy less than 370 square meters (as required by the Retail Business Closing Day Act).

Garden on garden

Another restaurant has closed at 5688 Spring Garden and a new one is scheduled to open June 22. The Italian Garden will follow on the heels of Casa Roma, which took over the space after La Cave closed. The owner of the Italian Garden isn’t yet revealing details.
