Reading is fundamental

If you're shy about sitting in a crowd and having your death predicted before a group of strangers, don't be. "Spirits only tell us what we're supposed to say in front of the group," says Laura Byrnes. "I may pick up of some little inkling of something more private, but not enough to expand on it."

Byrnes is a professional psychic. She and colleague Pat Wilson created local psychic tag-team the Hatha Girls, who offer an array of services from banishing malicious spirits to cleansing your aura.

Next week they are hosting SOULgasm, a live "soulgasmic" experience of communing with the dead, advice for the future and existential discovery. Friend and fellow medium Dan King will be joining the Girls to talk about "what it means that we survive death, reminding people why they are here." His goal, he says, is to "help guide people back to loving themselves."

The Girls were recently out doing free psychic readings in the windy streets of Halifax to promote the event. "It will be a group reading," says Byrnes. "Typically lots of past loved ones come through with messages, and there are always a few people who need help making life decisions."

They aren't preparing themselves per se, but trusting that those with the most urgent need will be attended to. "Spirit leads us. We're drawn to the person we have to talk to," says Byrnes.

And Wilson warns not to forget the Kleenex, because there's no leaving unchanged. "We're the catalyst that's going to change you," she says. "There's going to be a lot of hugging and crying." In a good way. The SOULgasm concept is a non-traditional brand of psychic spirituality. The Girls and King have built a reputation for themselves as being direct and modern in their approach.

"I want people to realize that you don't have to be a monk to lead a spiritual life," says King. "You don't have to give up modern conveniences." For him, connecting with spirituality is about discovering a purpose and merging body with soul. Or, as he puts it: Be who you're here to be, live the life you're intended to live.

"We're confidence-builders," says Wilson, "and when people leave they're going to have a more rounded sense of who they are." Byrnes adds, "We don't want people to depend on us, we don't want people calling every month for a reading. Our intent is to heal people---the biggest compliment is that they don't need us anymore."

The event takes place Sunday, May 4, at the Delta Barrington. Tickets are $65 advance, $80 at the door. The Hatha Girls will also be showcasing their new line of "spiritually infused" products.

Byrnes now creates jewellery using stones tailored to the psychic needs of each client--- even meditating with each piece to channel energy into the object. Wilson will also display her body care products, which can be tailored specifically for each client through the help of spirit guides who indicate which combination of essential oils would benefit the client.

Whether you're already one with the universe or spiritually ignorant, SOULgasm sounds---at the very least---like an interesting experience.
