It's lost in the wall-to-wall news coverage of the prospect of Canada's New and Improved Government, but there's an important environmental story unfolding this week and next as representatives from 185 countries meet in Poznan, Poland to negotiate a post-Kyoto climate change pact that will be signed next year. Quite literally the fate of the world hangs in the balance. There's great hope that the in-coming Obama administration will take climate change seriously, but many governments, including Canada's, are reluctant to take the kind of actions necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the amounts required to avoid cataclysmic climate change---at least 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.Local environmentalists and scientists held a press conference Monday to express concern about Canada's lacklustre response to climate change, and to ask Haligonians join millions of others around the world for a global day of action* urging Poznan participations to take their charge seriously. The Halifax part of the demo will be held Sunday, December 7, 1-4pm at Black Rock Beach. More information here.
*The global action is scheduled for Dec. 6, but since that is also the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, Canadian demos will be held the next day.
