Lie detector tests

Kudos to the Chronicle-Herald, which put the resources and reporters into tracking down the details of HRM's questionable lie detector tests given to prospective city employees.The lie test comes at the end of the process, after the applicant has already spent hundreds of dollars on other tests, and the questions are seemingly arbitrary, if not downright insulting---reportedly, one woman was asked if she had sex with animals. Wait, it gets worse still. Applicants to the fire department have to pay for the lie detector tests themselves---a caller told me he spent over $1,000 on the series of tests, only to be disqualified at the end of the process by what he deemed a bogus question---but the police department picks up the tab for applicants to the PD. And, turns out, the test is actually farmed out to an independent firm, owned by two Halifax police officers.I suspect the hiring scandal goes even deeper; I was told last year that a fellow who applied to become an IT worker for the city was denied the position because he admitted that, years ago, he smoked pot. In the city's eyes this meant he would steal residents' credit card info when they pay parking tickets, because, you know, pot smokers are all thieves. There's something fundamentally broken in the city hiring department.
