Internet voting foul-up

Posted By on Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 6:05 AM

Sure, it's a small thing. All the same...

Neal Alderson of Dartmouth was surprised Monday to receive two e-voting cards, and two separate personal identification numbers, in the mail.

Just as surprising, his wife Carla also received two. While he received one for "Neal" and another for "Neil," hers differed in the spelling of her middle name. Stephanie was misspelled "St Ephanie" on her extra card.

The couple live in Portland-East Woodlawn, where Coun. Bill Karsten was acclaimed. But they can still cast a vote — or two — for mayor.

"We’re one household with two people who are eligible to vote and we got four PIN numbers," Mr. Alderson said Tuesday. "So how widespread is the issue?"

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
