So i was coming over the bridge in a snowstorm and my loonie got stuck in a little film of snow on the inside of the money basket. Of course, the gate was up, I didn't realize and drove straight through and set off the alarm. One of the bridge guys waved me on (and a dick in an Audi was honking his fool ass off) so I took off like a thief toward the horizon. On the way back I decided to explain myself, since I had to get change anyway and wanted to make sure I hadn't risked a ticket. And there you were. I explained my story to you, you handed me my toonie back and said "No problem. You go on through. For your trouble." and you smiled at me very kindly. Not once did you suspect I might be just some ass trying to get a free pass.
See to lots of people this is a little thing but sometimes a little act of kindness has a huge impact. You knew I had trouble coming through but what you DIDN'T know is that after years of illness, a new and scary (and potentially terminal) diagnosis, I had recently landed a brand new job where I'm making a shit load of money suddenly. Of course I haven't been paid yet, am struggling to stretch out the last of my money before my first pay, and that was tomorrow's coffee money - coffee I had given up to make this trip across the bridge to look at a new apartment.
Because of you, I got coffee in the morning and on top of all the fear, changes, stress and excitement in my life, this means I have at least one more day of coffee before my first pay arrives. You helped me stretch my pittance forward to my very first paycheque on this super-awesome job. Which is not only awesome but a huge boost of confidence.
You made me feel super-happy, totally listened to and you can have no idea how much I appreciate that one little kind gesture. It really did mean the world to me. Someday I'll find a way to bestow a little kindness on you because.. —I Never Forget A Face :)
