I just want to say that I think everyone is being WAY too negative about the CUPW strike. Have you all forgotten that it was the CUPW that picketed for 42 days in 1981 for paid maternity leave and won? Which in turn is why mothers get one year paid maternity leave now? I think you need to check yourself and realize that they deserve to fight for whatever reason. You never know what can come from it. Edmonton doesn't get much love, but since I'm stuck here I figured I might as well try to like it and see the positives, so here I go:

I love your giant mall with the fake ships and waterpark, too cool! Mini-golf, ice skating, roller coasters, and the Fantasyland Hotel too.

Whyte Ave is always pretty hoppin with some good spots to go for nightlife. Rock on!

There's some surprisingly cool indie, artsy fartsy, etc. venues in various random places around town if you know where to look.

I love the sound the LRT makes when the doors are closing. Such a lovely, charming jingle (DING dong, DING dong).

The River Valley's pretty, lots of trails and things to do.

Love all the progress being made on 118 Ave (like the Gottingen Street of Edmonton). Lots of cool stuff happening up there. Now if they can only take the success to 111 Ave, 107 Ave, significant parts northeast of downtown, etc.

Love the fact you never have to get dressed up here, unlike Calgary, Vancouver, etc. I love that I can go to one of the nicest restaurants or bars in town in old jeans, a t-shirt, and Oilers cap and fit in perfectly fine.

Also some decent veggie/vegan places here, again if you know where to look.

Go Oilers and Eskies go! You've had some rough seasons lately, but I know you'll bounce back. This is the City of Champions after all.

I like the salt of the earth, unpretentious, tell it how it is blue-collar/working class nature of this city. You don't get that in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, or even really Halifax anymore. People may be kind of brash sometimes, but in a friendly, down to earth way.

Only a four hour drive to the Rockies - not bad! The surrounding Prairie scenery can also be impressive.

All the industrial areas may not be pretty, but interesting and impressive nonetheless. It's pretty cool seeing all the refineries and massive industrial complexes on the drive east to Sherwood Park.

Edmonton also has a (mostly) surprisingly progressive City Council. It's considered the liberal heart of Alberta, sometimes referred to as "Redmonton" (and yes, also "Deadmonton," but I'm trying to see the positives remember).

Anyway, I miss home (Halifax), but in my true Maritime spirit I'm still trying to look on the bright side of an otherwise unloved, unknown, underdog city. —Halimontonian

I just wanted you all to know how much I miss you. People say snail mail is dead, no one uses it anymore. But, I use it! I surround myself in beautiful stationary and I write letters and cards to send to friends and family all over the country. Email and other electronic forms of communication will never hold a candle to a pen and paper, a stamp, and the joy that comes from receiving something in the mail other than bills.

In response, I have sent out 19 of my paintings to the city, to make it look nicer, give it some colour, distract people from "BURN CONDOS" and let them know my generation isn't completely fucked. There is gonna be more too... Because painting is what I do.
