You are made of glass

Posted By on Fri, Jan 26, 2018 at 9:50 AM

The social justice scene in Halifax is getting out of control and I want to point out some the glaring inconsistencies in the logic of these warriors.  They seem to target many local businesses and hold them to standards that are extreme.  If a local business has a target demographic or a niche clientele they serve to and you are not included in it, that does not mean they have done anything wrong.  Making public claim that a barber shop is sexist or hates women because they offer short hair cuts only, or publicly labeling a tattooist non queer-friendly because they didn’t want to tattoo the concept you brought them or harassing local companies for trying to capitalize off of marketable opportunities most big company’s partake in is bullying. All the people making life harder for locals do not show the same attitudes towards big conglomerate companies. We don’t see the people in the mall lingerie stores screaming that you can’t buy both men’s and women’s underwear there. You don’t see people going into an suit store screaming they can’t get there wedding dress there.

Businesses are set up to serve specific interest. If they didn’t serve a special interest and everyone tried to accommodate everyone, we would have nothing but Walmarts. The fact so many people are trying to hurt local businesses with this attitude shows they are not trying to make the world a better place, they are trying to make it a worse place for someone specifically and we should not be silent and watch this happen anymore.  We should be protecting and nurturing our local business owners.  They are the ones you can talk directly to and voice concerns you have and find conclusions unlike the latter. They are run by real people working to stimulate a local economy that is very badly needed in Halifax but most people are just fishing for online drama not caring about the real life hardships they are bringing to someone in their community.  If you think you are helping your community by only seeing your own exclusion than you are only trying to help yourself.  —So Stop Throwing Stones

I Believe

Posted on Tue, Dec 22, 2015 at 4:00 AM

I believe its within each of us to snap out of this weird neurosis that's gripped society, the invisible-wall between us, the devil in our ear whispering that we're 'not good enough' or 'can't do it' and all that nonsense... Media-culture's a big Electric Dictator that constantly tries to intimidate the masses with sex, fashion and so-called culture. Stand up against the Invisible Collective Bully. If you're in a hole, stop digging

Posted on Thu, Oct 29, 2015 at 4:00 AM

The only environmental NGO on the East Coast (based here in Halifax!) was asked their opinion on offshore drilling near Shelburne. They responded by saying we should have the blowout equipment somewhere closely. Climate change is the BIGGEST FUCKING ISSUE facing the human species and THIS is what you have to say about risky, offshore oil drilling? Have you forgotten about the BP disaster? Meanwhile, scientists are telling the world we need to keep 80% of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground to stay within 2 degrees of warming. This is the threshold. If we go past it, we will see disastrous, runaway climate change. .... FUCK YOU VERY MUCH. —We want better

Transexual rights

Posted on Fri, Aug 7, 2015 at 4:00 AM

i think i finally figured out the real issue with transgender rights. firstly all the decision makers are men. that's a problem by itself, but, if trans men are allowed to use male bathrooms... they can't use the urinal. well, they probably could, and i think it would he hilarious to watch but that's not the point. it fills up our stalls and makes our bathroom line longer. and i don't know if you've noticed but the lack of a line for the mens bathroom is a point of pride for most men. and yes i know how sad that is i guess i'm one of the few people i know that gives enough of a shit about transgender rights to even attempt a conversation. i really just actually want to talk about it. it's a seriously complicated issue with a lot of very IRL consequences. and by "consequences" i mean the person sitting beside me while i'm taking a shit might have a vagina. though i guess the real issue people pretend exists is "men" being in the "womens" bathroom. because that is totally a thing. i mean, the only reason i don't rape people is because i lack the opportunity. thats kinda the implication here. and by "kinda" i mean there's literally an ad on tv stating that men will start raping people (children specifically, they imply that pedophiles will exploit) because they can now use the womens bathroom. thats fucked up on so many levels. so obviously the only solution is to make men dressed as women use the mens bathroom, because that's not fucking awkward and will never result in unnecessary calls to the police. —sinewave

Theatre blues

Posted on Tue, Jul 21, 2015 at 4:00 AM

This theater is my favorite one in Halifax. I have gone there my entire life. I even saw Star Wars there for the first time when I was very little. So it pains me to complain, but it must be done, because no one is fixing the situation.

1) how have they not designed a more efficient way to sell tickets? Every time I go there I have to stand in line (sometimes for up to 30 minutes because the solo cashier is ringing in each person, who invariable pays with a debit/credit card. Why can't some people buy their tickets at the popcorn stand? Or have a little booth that accepts cash only? Or even install one of the machines that are at other theaters in Halifax?

Now this wouldn't be so bad, except that even though there is only one movie playing, and they can see how many people are still in line, THEY START THE MOVIE ANYWAY. I understand that the start times are trickier in the evenings, but for a matinee? that has nothing playing until hours afterward? Why couldn't they delay the film for 10 minutes while everyone gets through the snail line? Often as I finally near the front of the line, I am greeted by the manager, as I hear the movie well underway inside. It is infuriating. This is a one film, old school theater. Why can't they adjust? —film geek

Happily hopeless

Posted on Fri, Jun 5, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Is ignorance bliss? Not a lack of knowledge, not stupidity, but choosing to ignore. Does it bring bliss? I'm thinking it might. I think about this a lot because the BS of politicians, war mongerers, racists, haters of all types, polluters, animal abusers, people abusers and various offerings by assholes of all types doesn't bring anything to my life except a constantly present undertow of disgust. It's difficult to have ever present disgust. It sucks the fun out. And I see my share of kindness, hope and cute kittens on social media but it's not a matter of focus or "finding balance" because the truth is that all of the bad doings by bad people are killing / persecuting / hurting / silencing / polluting / generally shitting on the good people who do good. It's a severely stacked deck and I don't feel it's reversible. And the bad doers have much more money, power and influence. This is why the good guy wins in a movie. To escape the fact for 2 hours that he doesn't and never will in reality. Not in the long term in a big way. I look at the murder of the NS film tax credit - and jsut think about our political leaders. You stupid fucking asshole shit heads! Were your parents brother and sister? The only system, in terms of THE system, is a corrupt, sick and twisted one. And it's self policed. How does one retain hope for what is obviously un-hope-able? Like a lot of others I have a built in disgust of unfairness and assholeism. And sometimes I fight against it... sometimes think about fighting against it... always admire those who fight against it... but I really am leaning towards giving up. I'm 55 this year and genetics suggest I won't see 75. Twenty years max. 7300 days. 116,800 waking hours. Let's round it down at 100k. I have Netflix. And many of my waking hours have not been ANYWHERE as far as I wish they had been. If moments create days and days create years, how many more moments do I want to go on asshole watching and feeling disgusted. And momentarily kidding myself that I or a group I'm a part of, or a group that I'm not a part of will take back the world and make it nice. Stay here for a short time - gone forever. Which feelings will I fill my days with? Laughter, lust, curiosity, creativity, love... these are much better emotions to fill my moments and years with. (Noticed I did not use the word HOPE which has already been addressed. ) It's ironic in a way. In our youth we care just about ourselves. We then grow up and care about others. This particular caring - if gone unchecked - can fester and grow and create huge misery and frustration. Maybe self caring once again is the only way out. I'm half saying and half asking. It's hard not to relate to George Carlin; "I don’t have pet peeves — I have major psychotic fucking hatreds!" I'm not sure that is reversible either. —Scotty 2 Hottie

limit free speech

Posted on Mon, Jan 19, 2015 at 8:10 AM

I just read a piece in a local publication , where Pope Francis, says free speech needs to be-" limited , especially when it refers to someones religious beliefs" He starts by saying "Free speech is not only a fundamental human right, but a duty to speak ones mind for the common good" B U T , when it comes to religion, there everyone has to shut the fuck up & you can't offend , particularly religions & their followers. Well ladies & gentlemen, I have a Huge Problem with that. Either we have free speech , or we have limited speech , which needs to be officially approved, & then you can say it. If one cannot openly express their views , except on subjects , decided on by the worlds (I'm assuming here, but am probably right) primary aka popular religions. Then IMO you have no free speech. That someone as the Head of a religious group should come out & even be taken seriously in their views that free speech should be limited as it relates to them in particular , is ludicrous. I will admit in a very narrow way I do agree on some very limited restrictions , for example ... No shouting FIRE FIRE ! in a crowded movie theatre or other place where using free speech in that context would probably cause panic & a rush to exits that could cause serious bodily harm/death. Or placing a sign up saying 'swimming hole open' in a alligator /crocodile inhabited place. But those in my opinion are the only types of restrictions there should be. I feel that once there is no freedom to criticize religions, then the Government won't be far behind ,If in fact they are not leading the way in restricting what can be said about them. The Police Services will jump aboard as a 'Government body , & on & on & on. Saying you can't criticize us, should immediately be grounds for nonstop constant criticism IMO. How can anyone ever express their belief on what they think is a subject of common good, if there are restrictions of not only many different types, but being restricted further each & every time someone gets offended by what another says. If freedom of speech & expression is to be upheld as a basic human right. Then any restrictions must be as few as possible, the fewer the better. This of course also pertains to people expressing hateful views, like the Dal dental group, holocaust deniers, Flat Earth society , Who are those religious nut cases who protest at dead soldiers funerals ?. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you or they shouldn't be able to freely say what you think or believe. As I am doing here against the Popes latest comments, free speech Ladies & gents will only stay that way as long as people are willing to fight to keep it. Further more the more we allow conditions & restrictions to be placed on it, the more of them there will be until no one will be allowed to say anything except "yes sir , how high sir" —The Pot calling the Kettle black arse is a good thing
