Wage slavery is alive and real

Posted By on Wed, Nov 6, 2019 at 9:27 AM

The cost of living keeps increasing every day. I'm talking basics like rent hikes and electricity—screw the luxury $200 cable and internet packages. As a single-person household, I cannot keep myself afloat without working two jobs and setting myself nuts. None of the jobs will pay you a livable wage. Employers only offer temp or part-time jobs without any benefits.

The price of food is ridiculous! I bought a pint of strawberries that were marked down 50 percent, some water and some bread, and that alone came to 15 bucks! Working people have to go to the food banks because their wages don't get them through to the next paycheque.

This is the generation of wage slaves, destined to live below poverty level forever. Boomers at least had the advantage of a housing boom and two-person-income household. If you're single in this province, or worse a single woman earning an average of 23 cents less on the dollar, life is grim and the future is bleak. Employers need to adjust their workers’ wages and salaries to account for the annual increases to the cost of living. Minimum wage is preposterous and pathetic. Even the educated get peanuts.

The only option to survive here is to sell drugs or ass. Or consciously couple up with some no-good partner who cheats and beats. No wonder people drink in public bathrooms and take nose dives off bridges here.

I can't put my paper and plastic (with no refundables) out the night prior because you steal the entire street's recycling!! WTF?? Knock it off, weirdos. I'm starting to hate this city because of trespassing idiots that do shit like this.

Halifax, you're barking up the wrong tree

Posted By on Sat, Aug 3, 2019 at 11:39 AM

This city is still in the Dark Ages. Why the hell can't I bring my dog on the bus or ferry? Why are there no actual dog parks here? If I wanted to bring my dog to the only off-leash dog-friendly area in the city, I have to go all the way to Point Pleasant Park, but guess what? I have to drive because Halifax Transit is so god damn lame they don't allow them. Why can I bring my dog on a street car, ferry, bus AND subway in any other city in Canada? (Also, the Common or that fenced-in parking space beside it doesn't count as dog parks either, folks.)

Just drive

Posted By on Thu, Aug 1, 2019 at 11:31 AM

Would you misguided potato-brained morons just stop trying to be so fucking “polite” when you drive, keep your right of way and stop, for fuck's sake, almost causing near-accidents!?! Are you doing the rest of us any favours by jamming your goddamn brakes on in the middle of a main traffic lane? Perhaps you’re related to the idiots who hit the brakes before turn signals. Smarten up before you do cause an accident, jackass.

Bad sound all around

Posted By on Mon, Jul 15, 2019 at 3:33 PM

To Halifax's favourite bar: Something has to be done about the sound quality and PA system currently in place—or perhaps those mixing the sound themselves—because I believe yours has become one of the worst live music venues in the city for actually hearing anything.

I've attended many live music events in this bar, and I'm almost always disappointed with the volume of the vocals and the projection of the sound in the space in general. But, after a recent concert where the acts were vocally inaudible, both from terrible sound mixing and quality but also the volume of disinterested patrons, I will no longer be attending live music in this space—at least until something is done.

It also seems ridiculous that big festivals town don't hold a venue accountable for quality when they are paying for world-class acts to perform in the city. It's disrespectful to the artists, and the patrons, and only reveals the lack of consideration for your audience.—Musicians who care

Tacky business moves

Posted By on Tue, Jun 25, 2019 at 11:12 AM

So I have nothing against businesses moving into the north end—it’s a good thing—but I do think it’s tacky to exploit the area to sell stuff, especially when it’s not even stuff that is of benefit to the local people. I’m also worried that I’ll eventually be kicked out to make more room for hipster money.

Where are all the goths?

Posted By on Tue, Mar 19, 2019 at 11:36 AM

Where the hell is Halifax's goth scene? All I want is a place where I can go on a Friday night and dance like Morticia Addams. So far, all that I've been able to find is the occasional kink night or halloween parties. What about us that are spooky all year round? One goth club is all that I ask.

To whoever jacked my Blundstones

Posted By on Tue, Feb 19, 2019 at 11:23 AM

I left a pair of grey blundstones in the back of a cab on Valentine's Day. This was my fault. After many calls to the cab company, I was told that the driver checked and was unable to find them. These are my only shoes, which I wear year round. So, to whoever took my beloved blunnies: I hope they give you blisters. They're flecked with orange paint so you'd better believe I'll be checking out every grey blunnie I come across.

Medical cannabis bullshit

Posted By on Tue, Feb 12, 2019 at 3:42 PM

Why is there not a single weed dispensary in all of downtown Dartmouth? There's one on Main Street, one in Woodside, but not a single one downtown! I am disabled and have to ride several buses in the winter time to get my medication! This is ridiculous! Also, these weed dealers who still sell illegally need to wake the fuck up and get out of bed if they want to service their customers. I'm not waiting for your ass all day anymore—now you have competition. I suggest you answer your fucking phone if you want to make money, dickhead!

Nepotism at its iciest

Posted By on Mon, Feb 4, 2019 at 4:52 PM

So there's a 36 hour standard to clear sidewalks when it's a fucking skating rink out there? HRM is knowingly and deliberately creating a public health hazard. One can't help but wonder how those "snow removal" contracts were awarded.

Can we please grow up as a city?

Posted By on Mon, Nov 19, 2018 at 12:10 PM

Every single cab in this city is busy every single weekend, and, for some reason, we still don't have Uber. Let's get Uber, or more cabs to accommodate this city's population. The amount of times I've received a recorded message from cab companies this fall telling me that the number was unavailable is ridiculous. And it's not at 2 or 3am in the morning when the bars are emptying out: It occurs anytime there is a minor event in this city or the slightest inclement weather. People are trying to get around safely and responsibly and we don't have enough cabs to do so. Maybe Uber isn't the solution, but something has to be done.

The friendless 'city'

Posted By on Mon, Nov 5, 2018 at 12:19 PM

After years away, I knew Halifax would've barely changed, with the exception that every great (and driven) friend of mine left, too. Outside of university clubs, there are no friendly socials in this city (unless you like book clubs, gaming or have an interest in local art). Who has ever seen such a bare meet-up selection? No wonder everyone feels lonely. Halifax: Act like a big city and start making it easier for people to meet new friends, then maybe they wouldn't all leave for greener pastures. Especially for a city that prides itself on immigrants and newcomers. Oh and, just a heads-up, not everything social needs to involve drinking.

Smoking bylaw madness

Posted By on Wed, Sep 12, 2018 at 5:07 PM

Shame on council for placing yet another ridiculous restriction on the good people of Halifax. You assholes will be remembered when election time rolls around again. Goodbye and good riddance. Not much good to have smoking be legal if you have to buy a boat, go 10 miles out to sea and weigh anchor before you can light up.

Halifax isn't all that!

Posted By on Mon, May 28, 2018 at 9:16 AM

I'm so tired of this city, it nickel and dimes you at every turn, I swear they budget themselves on parking tickets.  Anyway, that aside, I just wanted to say how unrealistic and pathetic people in the business community are in Halifax. Halifax is no Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton or stop thinking you can command house prices which are comparable to those cities. Halifax is in Atlantic Canada for crying out loud, there is NO argument that can be made which justifies the over inflated cost of houses and increasing costs of rents in this city. Oh and this urban dream you have of getting rid of cars downtown in favour of public transit and the like, KEEP DREAMING LOSERS.

Your bus system has a long way to go before you can even come close to thinking that way AND you need a third bridge at the South end of the city if its ever going to be efficient.  Its amazing how many common sense things there are which can be done to improve this city, but they don't because of unrealistic expectations and a city council that acts like a group of children, they should all be fired!  Oh the other thing is that the McKay bridge should have been directly connected to the 102, as it stands now it forces people into the city when a lot just want to get around...NOT GOOD PLANNING! But then again, its evident the planning was never good here, as evidenced by the fact that I've seen roads get paved just before power lines get buried.  WOW, talk about lack of planning and over expenditure.  I've had my fill, I've chosen not to buy a house here and I'm leaving the province.  There's just no way to get ahead in this city unless you're making 100K plus! —Fed Up with The Delusions of Haligonians

Halifax looks like a shithole

Posted By on Fri, Feb 23, 2018 at 4:00 PM

I swear to fuck this city is one festering pile of fuck. Garbage everywhere you look. The street is not a land fill for fuck sakes. It's not just coffee cups, it's big fucking piles of fuck. How many times can I say fuck? —Argh!
