Toothless laws to "protect" the city

Posted on Thu, Jul 19, 2012 at 3:13 PM

I just found out why there was a new law passed that requires drivers to give cyclists a one-metre gap. It gives the HPD the authority to ticket any cyclist who may still risk it and rides on the sidewalk, even if there are no pedestrians for 10 blocks in either direction. I ride on the sidewalk by merging off of Devonshire and heading south onto Barrington. 18-wheelers flying by all day long on that street at speeds much greater than 50 km/hr. I do this every day. Cop and I get into it, and I love how she felt that yelling at me halfway through was professional and servicing the public. I rarely if ever see this one-metre rule adhered to, let alone enforced. For some reason it's intentionally toothless to justify an attack on commuters who eliminate congestion in the downtown core. Next time she sees me on the sidewalk, pedestrians or no, I am getting a ticket but I got off today. Lucky me. Fuck you. —Geoff
