Such is life in this ridiculously "slow to change for the better" city we live in. The most striking evidence that things need to change is in the way we drive our cars. Most people speed. Its a fact. 60 in a 50 is speeding, even though 60 isn't that fast. All of the traffic lights that govern our directions to and fro are set to just below posted speed limits and behave differently at different times of day for obvious reasons. Did you know that for the majority of routes around a city it is actually less time consuming to drive within the speed limit, than it is to speed. Simple reason. No stopping and starting at traffic lights. Did you know that simply driving within the speed limit would eliminate nearly two-thirds of all traffic jam-ups and slow downs (national statistical average and public knowledge for 32 years).
Yet people, day after day, drive like uncivilized primates from light to light and stop sign to stop sign senselessly. And worse still, along the same routes they've been driving for years likely. Have you ever seen a rat run through a maze. Seriously. Can't you people recognize the similarities. Have any of you actually tried to see the difference or even asked yourself the question?
I won't rant on the ignorance of society. I won't say we live in a me-first world. And I certainly won't say I'm better than anyone else. I'm just sayin'... —Retired Traffic Consultant and Professor of Human Behavioural Sciences
