A bus bard's lament

Posted on Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 11:35 PM

Never thought I would write one of these, but here goes. Nearly every day on my way to class, I have to brave a bus that is insanely jam-packed full of people. Trouble is, though I am a skinny individual, I usually have a musical instrument on my back and a bookbag by my side, which considerably increases my width and effectively transforms me into a slow-moving human pack mule. The bus is usually so full that there's no place to sit down, and more people always flood in behind me, filling the bus to the brim. I usually end up caught in the middle, right by the back door—and whenever the bus comes to a major stop, a dozen people push and shove past me from both directions in the mass exodus off the overcrowded vehicle. I would say I wish people had the decency to pause and let me get out of their way, but I'm so hemmed in by the squeezing and hurrying and utterances of "excuse me" that there's nowhere to move to. I'm sick and weary of it, but I have a music degree to finish and I'm in no position to buy a car. So, hopefully someone will read this, and next time, find it in their heart to give a fellow harried commuter a break. —Stuck in the Middle
