Cinder Blocks on Barrington Exit of MacKay Bridge

Posted on Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Congratulations to the thundering morons driving a garbage truck pulling a trailer full of cinder blocks over the MacKay bridge. You are my first nominee for "Idiot(s) of the Year (MacKay Bridge Edition)". Last year's winner was the guy who didn't secure a fridge on the back of his truck, causing a big accident.

So, the cinder block falls off, smashes into some smaller (but still relatively large) shards. A nice touch is that, traveling at a fair speed and seeing them appear from under the car in front of you (it happened right at a corner so it's difficult to see the road ahead) it kind of looks like some dirty snow/ice that's been kicked out from the piles on the side of the road. Only it's vicious shards of stone which could easily burst a tire.

By far the best part is that, around half a KM later, the truck pulls over. As if it took the driver's brain that long to process what happened:

"Hey, what was that? ... Huh, look in the rear-view, there's a broken cinderblock in the road .... ..... hey, I'm hauling cinder blocks .... .... what a coincidence .... .... .... ..... wait a minute .... stop the truck!"

So he pulls over (but it's a large garbage truck so nobody can get past). He sits there for about a minute (maybe two) debating if he should go back and pick up the cinder block (I presume -- perhaps he was just sad the cinder block didn't cause more damage and figured he might as well delay everyone as well). Then, of course, he drives off without doing anything about it. Well it's not his problem is it? Not the worst thing which will happen today of course but still frustrating.
