I hate how Haligonians like to think that this is a dog friendly city. I used to think that too, until I got a dog. Sure we have some great dog stores, like Bark and Fitz, Willows, and the Naughty Dog. Yes, we have some great off leash parks (hi to everyone at Seaview!), and we can even take our pups into some fabulous stores (love the dog treats at the Quinpool Canadian Tire, and welcome to our new friends at Lululemon!). But when it comes to, oh, I don't know...FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE with our dog? Impossible. My boyfriend and I are young professionals. We have good jobs and no kids to spend it on, so we'll spend it on our home, but we're not ready to buy. All we want is to move out of our teeny tiny apartment and find a decent place to live.

Our dog is awesome, fully trained, spayed, up to date with all the shots and meds, she doesn't bark, she's not big or intimidating, and she doesn't destroy things. But every time we call about an apartment vacancy and ask if pets are allowed, we are met with "Cats yes, dogs no". Excuse me, but cats are disgusting. Cats claw the carpets and scratch the doors and walls. You can't get the smell of their piss out of the place once they're gone. People are more allergic to cats than they are to dogs, and a friend of mine has a cat who consistently yeowls louder than any noise I've heard come out of my dog.

I understand that if a building allows one dog they have to allow all dogs. But I don't see that as a problem. If you end up with a dog that is causing problems, treat them the same way you would treat any other tenant in your building. Evict them. The dog is too loud? Evict it, along with all the university students. Destroying the place? Evict it, along with all the toddlers. Intimidating people? Evict it, along with all the teenagers.

My dog is awesome, and way cooler than any of your other tenants. So the next time I hear a "No dogs allowed, it's policy", you're going to get a big FUCK YOU and your stupid "rules".

I'm getting ready to just move her in without telling you, you'd probably never even notice.

Dogs rule, cats drool
