First a little balance: thanks to Celtic Corner in Dartmouth for hosting David Francey, singer-songwriter-storyteller extraordinaire, last Thursday. And thanks too for employing a top-notch wait staff and for not overcrowding the place. It's the little things that show an understanding of a particular performer and the kind of audience that's likely to show up. Imagine your customers’ disappointment, then, to see such indulgence for the we-don’t-give-a-shit-about-the-rest-of-you crowd sitting by the window, and especially for the gargantuan loud-mouthed oaf at the bar. Yes, I know they're your friends, and yes I know they're probably regulars, but hosting a performer like David Francey means welcoming a mellow, mostly middle-aged, CBC-listening crowd to your establishment, who’ve come to appreciate his stories and song. Next time, tell the goofballs who are too stunned to figure out why everyone’s glaring at them to come back another night when they can get shit-faced to their favourite drinking songs. And invest in a lesson in manners for your Shrek in a dress shirt. When asked by a couple patrons to tone it down, what was his reply? “Why don’t you just buy the fuckin’ CD and listen to it at home?” Nice.
