Sociable Ears for Friday

Who in the world is talking about Halifax (Oct.5/07)

Posted on Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 10:32 AM

It's Alexander Keith's birthday, a celebration literally born in Halifax even though annoying beer drinkers across the country are threatening to turn it into a national event. From a Winnipeg news site called

Born in Halkirk, Scotland, Keith was already an established brew master by the time he came overseas and settled in Nova Scotia. Passionate about his talents, he established the Alexander Keith’s Brewery in Halifax in 1820. He was only 25.

Keith's interests went far beyond beer; he served as the mayor of Halifax three times, and was a member of the Legislative Assembly for 30 years.

And even though Keith lived most of his life in Nova Scotia, the rest of Canada is making sure this day isn’t forgotten. Various pubs across the country are hosting parties in his honour, and Winnipeg is no exception. There are 10 locations in the city holding events to commemorate this day; including all of the Tavern Uniteds, The Toad in the Hole Pub and Eatery, Elephant and Castle, Shannon’s Irish Pub, both Dylan O’Connor’s Pub and Restaurants, and the King’s Head Pub. (story here)

Doesn't Winnipeg have any home-grown legends to celebrate? What about Doug Henning?

In other celebrity news, English royal-watching site has the royal family's calendar, and guess who's coming to town. No, not her. Guess again. Uhn uhn, he's busy. I can't believe you're not getting this. It's THE EARL OF WESSEX!!! Yes, for reals, the queen's husband is going to be in Halifax.

Sunday, 14th October 2007

The Earl of Wessex, Trustee, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award International Foundation, will attend a Charter For Business Reception at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Earl of Wessex, Trustee, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award International Foundation, will attend a Reception for young people who have achieved the Gold Standard in the Award at the Delta Halifax Hotel, Barrington Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. (story here)

This is so great. Tragically I'm already booked for something totally important that day, but if you go I'd love to hear about it. (Chronicle-Herald reporters, I'm talking to you.)

Burning Ears is lurching back towards regular posts. Help its progress by sending Halifax links here.
