The house was almost full and the audience was primed for Andy Jones’ An Evening with Uncle Val. They weren’t disappointed.
Jones is hilarious as the aging and frustrated Newfoundlander who tells the story of his “captivity” in the suburbs of St. John’s in the form of letters to a friend in his beloved out port home. Val has opinions on almost everything, from the sorry state of modern child-rearing to enduring qualities of a good cup of tea. His twisted humour and wry observations bring his world of difficult relatives and loony neighbours to life.
Woven into the Uncle Val tales are comments and observations from Jones himself, or at least Jones playing someone meant to be himself. This narrative is as twisty as the oft-mentioned roads of St. John’s, spanning topics as far-flung as Confederation’s effect on Newfoundland to Jackie Kennedy’s love affair with Bob Marley (Don’t ask. Just go see for yourself.). Jones is at his puckish best here, charming the audience with his ready smile and crinkly eyes.
Catch An Evening with Uncle Val on May 5 at 9:30 pm and May 6 at 7 pm at the Alderney Landing Theatre, 2 Octerloney St, Dartmouth. 1-888-311-9090
