You must listen to Surveillance

Sorry, but you must. See them live and scream all the words during OBEY

Tri Le is hitting two firsts this season–graduating from college and playing OBEY. The two go hand-in-hand: as a recording arts student at NSCC, the former bedroom recorder had new techniques to put to work on pop-punk trio. Surveillance's month-old EP Stressed and Depressed.

"I learned there's a proper way to do things, there's no real right or wrong," he says. "It's more about how you perceive it—it's subjective. I did learn the most efficient and fastest way to do things, and that helped me a lot." But he didn't stray too far from his DIY roots, choosing to capture the vocals on cheap equipment. "Everything was such high-fidelity but when we did vocals we did something interesting–instead of using high-end expensive audio equipment, we did them all onto this $100 tape machine," Le says. "It really dumbed down the quality, but gave it a nice aesthetic that people enjoy. It really made the difference."

Up next Surveillance, which includes Rachel Fry and Dave Burns, will record and self-release a seven-inch in Le's basement or maybe at his new gig with Charles Austin at Echo Chamber Audio. Before then, get acquainted with the catchy, noisy jams on Stressed and Depressed, including the epic closer "Fucked Up and Naked," which as you could probably guess from the title, is "about being fucked up and waking up in a spot you don't know," says Le, laughing. "It's about kids being kids." --TT
