WHO ARE YOU?

An observer, a people-person, coffee nut, wisecracker, audiophile and I'm scared of stepping on sewer grates. When I was in my late teens I reached this harmony with myself, a clarity of being, so to speak, and suddenly understood deep-down who I was. And I feel lucky for that. But years later I think I'm still figuring out what to do with this knowledge, or where my place in the world is and how I can be most useful. One thing I know is that music is a big part of how I navigate this winding road.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Singer-songer and guitar-player. Storyteller. Creator of space, ambiance, melody and good hangs. I think in a different life I'd like to be a floral arranger or a pilot. In the past I've been a bartender, a student of ethics, owner of a veg catering company, a baker, an athlete.

WHERE DO YOU DO IT?

Quiet spaces are hard to come by—I've learned to adapt because I'm always in motion or in the company of people. I carry several notebooks, some for words and others for charting, so when I'm nestled in a library or squished on the plane, I can capture thoughts. Recently I learned the value of a studio or dedicated writing space—I spent four weeks in residence at The Banff Centre overlooking mountains from a giant studio just for me, with a number of guitars and a baby grand piano. Back at home I arrange my notebooks on the desk in the cozy corner of my bedroom, where sunbeams illuminate the room just before supper.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The music industry baffles me, and I think that's part of why I'm still in it. Mostly it's the people that draw me in, and the constant inspiration (especially in Halifax!). NPR's All Songs Considered just rocked the first track, "Mistakes," from my upcoming album which was a pleasant surprise. Moon Through Window is my fourth album and comes out in the fall, and it's the most ambitious and saturated thing I've ever made. Right now I'm working on songs with the incredible folks who are Mauno. After this mini-Maritime tour we're off to the west coast for a few weeks in the summer and then overseas in September. I also fell into an ethereal project of atmospheric vocal sounds and spacious piano with a talented player from California (we met in Banff), and we are trying to find ways to keep that up because it feels too good. The plan is to get around and get out there. And weed the garden.
