West is West goes south

The sequel to East is Eaststarts strong but unravels in the end.

It’s been 12 years since writer Ayub Khan-Din unleashed East Is East, a comedy about a working-class family headed up by an abusive, controlling Pakistani patriarch (Om Puri) and a tart-tongued white Briton (Linda Bassett) in the early 70s. Puri’s George Khan was so loathsome that the movie, for all its virtues, left a bad taste. George is somewhat chastened – although unlikeable - in the sequel, which finds him hauling his youngest son Sajid (Aqib Khan) to Pakistan to learn about his roots. As a teenager who’s internalized the racist venom spewed at him in England, Khan is brilliant, exuding rebellious charisma and vulnerability in equal parts. The movie loses its way, though, when it loses track of Sajid and tumbles toward a Benetton-ad ending that includes a wedding and George’s false redemption.
