Touring Green - Blog 15: Fernie to Calgary (May 30)

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

This morning meant more repairs as the last of the spokes were fixed and some break pads and wheels got so much needed re-alignment. After the repairs at a find cycling shop in Fernie (, I got a good hour bike in before, and I don’t mind saying this as I’ve still got sooo much more biking to do, my sister picked me up in the mini-van and drove me to Calgary so I could have a couple more days with her, my brother in-law Olof and my niece, Anna (Not to mention that I still need to plan accommodations for much of the back half of the trip!). So, the extra time is much needed and I’m very happy to have it.

Being in the car though meant the first time I was accelerating over 52k (my fastest biking speed), for quite some time and, I must say, one truly appreciates the invention of the automobile in such a situation; wow, they’re great… you can get places sooo fast and stay dry, and be sitting with a back rest, and not be pushing your body, and not be eating bugs and did I say you were dry and not outside? Anyway, was quite nice to drive into Calgary and take a couple days off the saddle (though I’ll probably be biking at least 100k around the city while I’m here because, in the city, biking is really the best option; especially in Halifax! I challenge any car to beat me from point A to point B when I get home from say Quinpool to Downtown at mid-day ). Here’s my excitement from the automobile and its wonder (it’s like going back in time to the 1920s except people aren’t getting killed by them every two seconds):
