The opening scene of Caryl Churchill's timely and timeless Top Girls is set literally before your eyes. A prim and pregnant waitress lays a table for six as the curtain opens on a dinner party that includes an eclectic mix of female guests from across the ages. The occasion is a celebration of success---female success. But as the characters on stage make clear, success for women often comes at a high price. It was director Sherry Smith's idea for LunaSea to stage the play. "It's perfect for LunaSea's mandate---strong women roles for Halifax's incredibly talented ladies---both young and older," she says. "And it's not in the least conventional. Two scenes take place in a suspended place and time. It has a plethora of powerhouse performances that you will not see on any stage together again for quite some time!"

To May 8, North Street Church, 5657 North Street, 8pm (and 2pm Sat and Sun), $20/$25, 864-2126
