Fairytale wedding with sweets and sweethearts

Maria & Josh, married August 1, 2010.

Maria Garcia and Josh Walt first met at university in 2004. They quickly became friends, and started dating in early 2005. Maria and Josh’s wedding was not just a celebration of love for each other, but also for their families and their traditions. Both families stood under the wedding huppah (the marriage canopy), including their grandmothers, whom the couple had not seen in almost nine years. Special kippot (skull caps), embroidered with the date and couple’s names, were given to male guests as a keepsake, and of course they danced the Hora.

Maria’s Colombian background was reflected in the reception wedding buffet, which included dishes such as coconut rice and desserts made with dulce de leche. Lucky guests got to take home wedding favours of Nova Scotian salt-water taffy and candies made in Colombia. Music was also a big part of the day, especially when Josh’s father, Shimon Walt, who is a cellist with Symphony Nova Scotia, surprised the happy couple with a performance.
