"Every human being deserves the right to a safe environment in which to lay their head to rest," says Dwayne Wright, musician and organizer of Headbangers Against Homelessness.
On Saturday at the Oasis, the fundraiser features four Halifax metal bands—Aikia, Snap the Butterfly, Forward Unto Dawn and Oceans Will Rise—with all proceeds going to Shelter Nova Scotia.
An employee of Metro Turning Point, an emergency men's shelter on Barrington Street, Wright planned the event to bring attention to the continued prevalence of homelessness in the HRM.
"Sometimes we take for granted the benefits of secure housing," Wright says. "Thankfully, it seems the stigmas against homelessness are shifting and people are starting to become more aware, but there can never be enough education."
With the increasing costs of rent and living in Halifax, homelessness has the potential to affect anyone. Wright knows living and income situations change quickly and easily.
"Essentially we could all be there tomorrow if the cards fell in such a way. You never know," he says.
Until the system stabilizes, shelters in HRM are essential.
"We are honoured to play for Shelter Nova Scotia, which supports individuals and families across our city and province," says Matt McGrath, the vocalist of melodic death metal band Oceans Will Rise. "Organizations like Shelter Nova Scotia are crucial to the fabric of society. We have poverty, hunger and require alternative support initiatives. Nova Scotians need your support everyday. You'll get some headbanging tunes by four east coast heavies, along with the pride of knowing you're making a difference in someone's life."
