Because I work from home this is one of the only private places I have. Because of the dark colour, and that it’s not that large of a room, it’s a nice place to nest in.
What makes this room your favourite?
“It’s got 10-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, original mouldings. It’s not a particularly large room but because it has the high ceiling it feels a lot bigger. And it’s also painted in a flat black, a Benjamin Moore called Wrought Iron. I find a black colour tends to recede, so the walls rather than coming in actually go out, so it makes a space that’s small feel bigger.”
The inspiration: “I was dealing with an imperfect space. It had some mouldings that didn’t match, the walls weren’t perfect, and I find a dark colour like that hides a whole bunch of sins. When you use a flat paint it highlights things less, so you don’t get a sheen on a crack or a bump in the wall. And I wanted something dramatic because the room had nothing else going for it.”
The best part(s): “I don’t believe in buying disposable furniture. Some people buy things just to throw out, I prefer to buy something that somebody would use after I’m finished with it. The bed is from my grandparents’ cottage, and there’s a dresser in here that’s from my grandparents, too. When you don’t have a lot of money for decorating a great way to do things is to buy antiques, they’re usually better quality.”
