There's some magic in Mirror, Mirror

This Snow White story has much to recommend it

This take on the Snow White story is a pleasant family affair with wry comic turns from both expected and unexpected sources. Julia Roberts tops the marquee as a vain, scheming queen desperate to maintain her grip on her kingdom and her fading beauty, delivering everything one could ask for in a big movie-star performance save for a consistent accent. Lily Collins, who looks more like the creation of a Disney animator than the spawn of a Genesis drummer, plays a luminescent and spunky Snow White. And Armie Hammer is surprisingly funny as the prince who comes between daughter and wicked stepmom. What’s also surprising is the restraint shown Tarsem Singh Dhandwar. Normally a narratively-challenged stylist, the director deploys his trademark visual flair in a way that services, rather than overwhelms, the sharp, witty script.
