The Modern Men keep it real

While ironing their own clothes and birthing babies, this synth-pop group pops out a danceable CD.

"It's been a time of birthing, so we've been birthing CDs and we've been birthing babies," says Seth Bernstein, one of the three men that make up synth-pop group The Modern Men, when asked what he and his bandmates have been focusing on the past few years. Fionn Chin-Yee and Seth's brother, Jonah, make up the rest of the partnership, spanning Halifax and Toronto. The Men have just released their first album, The Sensual Sounds Of, created over the past couple of years with one of the Bernsteins and Chin-Yee sitting down to write a song, and sending it digitally to each other for collaboration---a process forced by distance, but that worked for everyone. Produced by Tim Jim Baker at Common Grounds Studio in Halifax, Andrew Watt, Glenn Austin, LuLu Healy and Mike Farrington also contributed their musical talents. In an email minutes after this phone chat, Seth writes of The Modern Men: "We caregive, iron our own clothes, cook using local ingredients, listen to our emotions while using our heads and believe in providing what we call a 'multi-sensual' experience to our listeners: music that will make you dance, kiss or cry."
