The Fabric of Clay stitches together an artists' life

When Alexandra McCurdy makes art, only a handful of every 20 attempts turn out properly. This isn't because she is careless, or because she strives for absolute perfection. McCurdy struggles with making usable pieces because she---and only she, because her style of medium is truly unique---goes through the strenuous process of layering and weaving porcelain boxes. "Making ceramics is labour intensive," says McCurdy. "It feels wonderful to look back at the evolution of my work." The Fabric of Clay is a celebration of her career and chronicles her 45-year journey as a ceramist, printmaker and independent curator. It's the first time her work will be displayed in such a way---the exhibition includes ruby red jewel boxes from her earlier NSCAD days, quillwork pattern dishes inspired by her thesis study on women's textiles and her award-winning, deeply personal woven boxes.
