The New Tonic
CBC Remix Series
Wanting their inaugural release to be a collaborative project, The Extremities approached four east-coast jazz legends to cut Tonic. They applied their trademark synthetic sounds and dusted-off beats, creating a soulful, layered hybrid album that flows smoothly between pleasing jazz and bumping hip-hop. The four tracks featuring Halifax emcees Fiz and Ghettosocks truly make this album worth buying, especially standouts “Square One” and “Listen.” The New Tonic, a culmination of great efforts by a number of talented people, will hopefully inspire more collaboration between the samplers and the sampled.
