The Empty Room

By Lauren B. Davis (HarperCollins)

The Empty Room covers a day in the life of alcoholic Colleen Kerrigan--- and it’s not a good day. The haunting novel begins with a promise not to drink, but of course it doesn’t last long, especially after a confrontation at work. Filled with vivid description, Davis’ writing is honest, desperate and raw, resulting in a book that’s easy to devour despite its serious subject matter. Colleen’s current day struggles are interwoven with flashbacks to the moments that brought her to where she is, providing a nice contrast to a story where most of the action happens emotionally. Davis, who has been sober for over 18 years, delivers a realistic look into what it’s like to battle the demons of addiction. The Empty Room grabs ahold of the reader, so that despite all the darkness, you’re still left clinging to that faintest bit of hope.
