The Croods

As usual, a sassy sloth steals the show

Bad jokes meet vibrant visuals in the (spoiler warning) historically inaccurate CGI kids flick, The Croods. Emma Stone voices Eep, the broad-shouldered teenage daughter of the modern Stone Age family Crood. Overprotected her whole life by her worrisome father (Nicholas Cage), Eep's dreams of adventure aren't satisfied by short daily food hunts. After a cataclysmic event forces the family to migrate across foreign terrain, Eep meets up with rebellious bad boy human Guy (Ryan Reynolds). Who's all totally hot, with his fire and his increased prefrontal cortex. Dreamworks Animation slathers the rocky world with fantastical, colourful creatures, but the microwaved plot and shoehorned in pop culture references don't offer a leg to stand on. A sassy sloth doubling as a caveman belt gets some decent laughs, and there's also lots of mother-in-law jokes, for whatever that's worth.

The Croods is not showing in any theaters in the area.
