The Book of Jezebel: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Lady Things

Anna Holmes

The only book in which you'll find composite images of Betty Crocker next to a definition of "crotch." Jezebel, a self-identified "ladyblog" is easily the most popular and accessible (young) women's general interest website online. While web content is driven mainly by pop culture, news and hilarious and/or thought-provoking personal essays through a feminist lens, The Book of Jezebel takes the same cynical intelligence and delivers up a jam-packed encyclopedia of all things woman. From "Aaliyah" to "zygote," Greek goddesses to ladies of literature to riot grrrls to nostalgic music, magazines and cultural terms, this collection is the perfect mix of pride-inducing history and marginalia. While inherently American-centric (like the site), The Book of Jezebel, like the very Internet itself, is a collaborative entity, with contributions from dozens of fiercely intelligent writers and artists, and delivers up the same winning combo of feminist humour and hubris the website has grown famous for.
