Suzanne Caines' work in progress

Spaces of Places gives a glimpse at an artist at work.

In September Suzanne Caines spent four days talking to strangers on Saint Mary's campus. These conversations about special or memorable places were videotaped to become part of, and the inspiration for, Caines' installation Spaces of Places."It's about having an intimate moment with a stranger, sometimes people divulge a lot of information...and sometimes they don't." A compilation of these intimate moments will be playing in the university's high-traffic atrium while the ongoing construction of the installation will take place in SMU's side gallery. While editing through the hours of strangers' memories, Caines began to make preliminary drawings that correspond with the places discussed. During the month of January, she'll continue working on drawings, cutting out shapes and piecing them together to form Spaces of Places."I wanted the actual construction of the work to be a performance....It's looking at the difference between a stage moment and a real moment, and how we decipher that." Stop by to find the drawing that matches your story, or to get a peak into an artist's studio.

To Feb 6, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, 5865 Gorsebrook Avenue, Opening reception Friday Jan 7, 8pm
