To the editor,
I was wondering who I might contact re: enforcement of the no-smoking rules in and around the transit terminals? I have never actually seen these rules enforced but I'm pretty certain they exist. I seem to be the only one though, as the bus drivers, security guards and random transit riders light up all the time at the terminals. Perhaps the signs were put up merely for decoration, or as a way to shut up people like me (the see-we-put-up-signs-we-are-doing-something defence). I know this letter won't actually do anything. The transit higher-ups will read and scoff, the people with HRM will read and say, "We don't even enforce the littering laws, why would we enforce this one?" I get it, I do understand that the purpose of totally unenforceable by-laws are to placate me and my ilk. But can somebody explain to me why they won't take my recycling when I've accidentally put a piece of scrap paper in with the plastics, but an on-duty bus driver can blow smoke into my child's stroller and then flick his butt onto the ground and no one says boo?
