Sarah Slean dreams big---not content to just score a 21-piece orchestral half like Sea of the double album Land & Sea, she found a way to take that big sound on the road (on Sunday her core travelling strings five-piece will be joined by seven Symphony Nova Scotia players) and now she's working on a musical. "It's the next logical step for me," says Slean. "That's what's happening now, that's the ride of life in general, imagining these things to make your eyes brighter and wider." It's both exciting and unsurprising---her songs have an inherent theatricality that rise from story-like lyrics and sweeping strings. There's more here than meets the ear. It's the same with Slean's touring ethos: do more. "Instead of cutting a swath through the country leaving only music and diesel fumes in our path," Slean says, "I always wanted to find something that would make me feel like we were leaving hope and positivity and a good impact." So, Slean partners with charities and promotes her Joy Jar project---

a "leave a penny, take a penny" idea but with good juju written down on paper. "It's this amazing chain of positivity...we're leaving a trail of it as we cross the country."

Sunday, March 10, 8pm, Spatz Theatre, 1855 Trollope Street, $32.59
