Room 237 | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

If someone asked you about Stanley Kubrick's movie The Shining, you might say it's a horror film set in a creepy hotel. That's fine, but what the movie's really about is the genocide of Native Americans. No, wait, it's about the Holocaust! No, it's actually a shrouded confession from Kubrick about faking the moon landings! No, it's about subliminal sexual messages in advertising! Room 237 packs all this and more into its 102 minutes, going over some of the more out there theories surrounding The Shining. Most of the evidence is faint or simply too far-reaching, drawing on tiny details to propel massive claims. The logic goes something like this: 1. Kubrick was a meticulous, detail-orientated director. 2. Everything in his films is there for a reason. 3. Therefore, aliens. All right, so nobody pulls out any ancient astronaut theories, but it comes close. The documentary is like one of those rambling conspiracy theory videos on YouTube, though with better editing and music.
