Romantic Comedy

There's a line in Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy that says something to the effect that nothing in life should last longer than two hours. If only the playwright had heeded his own words! The first act of this three-hour play is top-notch. It's well-paced and the laughs are plentiful. Stacey Fownes as Phoebe, the quirky, naive aspiring playwright, is absolutely believable and charming. Fownes and Jonathan MacDonald, as the self-absorbed established writer, play well off each other. But the laughs become fewer as things bog down in the second act, and the play grinds to a depressing and unbelievable finish in the third. Still, most of the blame lies with the play itself, and there is enough entertainment value in the first act alone to make a visit to Bedford Players worthwhile.
