Ray Davies
Working Man’s Café
(New West)
On his second solo album, recorded in Nashville, Davies tries to slip into the American landscape and is still instantly identifiable. “Morphine Song” would fit on any Kinks album with its character-filled take on his hospital stay after getting shot in the leg. An understated beauty graces “In a Moment” and melody and personal warmth enhance his observations. This Renaissance Englishman occasionally sounds out of place in this digital age and could use a bit of dissonance musically. Still, the same wit percolated in his songs 40 years ago, but it’s the juice of the band that made them unforgettable. This new material deserves as much.
