Props for props

To the editor,

I was originally going to write to complain about the violent reactions to a "Love the Way We Bitch" online post and to say that it's a "bitch" column, not a love-in. But I realized that what The Coast really needs is not a bitch session at all, but rather a place to say something positive. I lived out west for a number of years and in winter the local newspaper ran a segment entitled "Sub-Zero Heroes" where people could write in to express gratitude to a complete stranger who performed a random act of kindness to someone in desperate need in what could be -40C temperatures. It was exciting to read about how people voluntarily to helped others out. Does that ever happen here? Seemingly not often, what with all the bitching going on, but I have actually been the recipient of a few such favours. Here's one: once, at the toll booth, I dropped my token, and rather than blow the horn the guy behind me actually got out of his car, picked it up and deposited it in the slot! It made my day. I couldn't stop thinking about it and it was a simple thing. I'm sure people would get so much more positive energy from a "Hero" segment than any benefit derived from bitching. Maybe we can have both?
