You wouldn't necessarily expect to hear a DJ at the Halifax Urban Folk Fest, and that's totally fair. But a booty-shaking opportunity is a booty-shaking opportunity, so don't miss out. Mitchell Pineo, AKA PINEO, adds a little night life variety to the festival, with remixes, wild beats and bass for days.
"The set I'll play at HUFF will definitely be a lot different than my performances during frosh week or at Pacifico for example," he says. "It's really one of the most exciting parts about being a DJ–there's a real freedom to dip into all sorts of genres and mix them all together to create something new."
Although HUFF is a slightly incongruous feather in the cap for the young DJ and producer, it's one of many this year. In addition to being featured in our New Music issue in June, PINEO's remix of Calvin Harris' "I Need Your Love" hit the top 10 on Hype Machine's global chart–I was among some of my biggest heroes it was a pretty surreal experience," he says–and performed at Evolve.
Like a record stuck in a groove, PINEO keeps moving. "I'm releasing my second EP C'est La Vie in September which is what I spent most of the summer working on, and I'm thrilled to be finally getting out but in this music scene you can't really dwell on one release for too long," he says. "I'm already working on a lot of new material that I'm hoping will break in to some corners of dance music that I haven't been into before."
Take a break from the soft and quiet this HUFF season and dance your heart out in between the introspective tunes this weekend. Variety is the spice of life, and Pineo's spicy DJ skills will keep you spinning into September. --Stephanie Johns
