Omens | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Canadian urban fantasy author Kelley Armstrong starts a new series with Omens, featuring Olivia, a wealthy young woman with a perfect life until it all predictably falls apart. In this case it's because she, and the world, learn she was adopted from serial killers serving life sentences. She escapes to Cainsville, Illinois, a small town with an aversion to strangers but a peculiar interest in Olivia. With the help of her birth mother's lawyer, Gabriel, she works to uncover her family history. I really expected more supernatural from Armstrong, and although there's sequel potential, Omens is fundamentally a mystery. Still, it has smart writing, a complicated (but not confusing) plot and compelling relationships. Ultimately, Omens may not have been what was expected but the clever storytelling meant I enjoyed it regardless.
