The future of the world's bees is threatened by colony collapse disorder. The tiny creatures responsible for stinging people, making delicious honey and pollinating 80 percent of the world's plant species are disappearing on an epic scale. More Than Honey buzzes around the globe to explore the condition of bees in Switzerland, America, China and Australia. Although numerous threats exist, big bee business is revealed as the most disturbing. Parasites, bacterial infection and incest (yes, incest) plague bee hives, but the violence of the bee industry is truly haunting. Through a series of extreme close-ups Imhoof encourages a surprising intimacy between viewer and bee. Markus Imhoof's skilled direction ensures that the bees' plight impacts his audience. This is a strikingly beautiful film with a singular message: save the bees or risk humanity. Although the theatrical release features questionable subtitles, the DVD offers an alternate version narrated by John Hurt---what could be better?
