OK, I guess, here's another Pixar sequel which didn't really need to be made and is mostly fine. Monsters University is a prequel to 2001's Monsters Inc. which finds college-bound Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal, surprisingly still versatile) butting heads with his new scaring school rival, James Sullivan (the also-returning John Goodman). The two will have to find a way to work together if they hope to beat the other cool frats and impress the crabby dean into letting them finish their studies or whatever. Monsters Inc. was classic kids story of a fantastical world upended by the appearance of a single cutie-pie toddler (while also containing a nice little message about laughter being more powerful than terror). This is a satire of college films, but with monsters. Which, who's that for? Monsters University isn't bad, and carries itself along charmingly, but it's hard to feel this wasn't a disposable effort from the once bewilderingly enchanting Pixar.
